This course examines the effects of fire and fire suppression on BC ecosystems, plants and animals. Indigenous cultural burning and the role of fire in maintaining ecosystems are covered in detail. The basics of fire physics, and the impacts of climate change, are reviewed. Students learn how to use various online resources to determine local fire histories, presence of species at risk, and other matters pertinent to fire planning and fuels management. The fundamentals of fuels management and prescribed burning are covered, as well as post-wildfire restoration techniques. The two-day BC Wildfire S-100 training course is part of ENRT 145; this course covers basic fire suppression and safety. Students will also learn from guest speakers, videos and participate in a cultural/prescribed burn if the opportunity is presented.
